Griffy Lake Fishing Pier and Loop Trail
Griffy Lake is a man-made reservoir on the North side of Bloomington, and is now designated as a Nature Preserve. Mader Design was initially hired to create a master plan that included improvements to the existing boathouse decks, and a new fishing platform that would accommodate floating docks. This main fishing platform was designed to also serve as an outdoor classroom space, to help expand the Parks Department’s regular programming.
During the design process, the project was greatly expanded to include a much needed “loop trail” aspect. Approximately 1,500 feet of ADA accessible trail will run the entire length of the county causeway, connecting trail users to several new fishing areas and the main fishing platform. Another major trail connection is designed across the crest of the existing dam, with a stairway connection to an ancillary parking area.
These major trail connections and improvements, in addition to the new fishing platform, will greatly increase and enhance park user’s opportunities to experience the natural world around them.
Mader Design was very proud to sponsor a brand new canoe for the Griffy Lake boathouse, which was presented to the Bloomington Parks Department at the 2022 ribbon cutting ceremony. Mayor John Hamilton paddled the vessel on it’s maiden voyage through the waters of Griffy Lake Nature Preserve.
